The process of powdercoating can be described as refinishing a surface with a dry powder using an electrostatic or compressed air method. The powder is cured in an oven to its melting point at which time it flows to form a smooth finish that is far more durable then liquid applications while providing an excellant looking finish.
The general process takes several steps:
Begin by cleaning or stripping the surface of any materials as well as oils and dirt. This can be done several ways with the most common and effective being media blasting and chemical liquids.
Once the part is stripped clean it is often ‘pre-baked’ to insure any oils or materials are completely removed.
On many jobs such as motorcycle parts there are areas where powder buildup could prevent proper function of the part after being powdered. In these cases high temperature tape and plugs are used to keep powder out of certain areas, these could be things like bolt threads or areas that are joined by grommets and rubber rings.
After being cleaned and taped the piece is hung from a metal rack where it will have powder applied. The rack or the part itself is clipped with an electrostatic cord that allows the free flowing powder to adhere to the surface of the part.
After the powder is applied the part is baked in a large oven most often at a temperature of 350-400 degrees. Color,texture, amount of powder all can affect the final baking time.
